MRHS Physics Teacher Awarded the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal & Desert Storm Medal
Marlboro High School’s Dr. Richard T. Malik was honored on October 25th for his service as a Chief Petty Officer in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
At a ceremony in Toms River, Brig. Gen. Michael Cunniff, adjutant general of New Jersey National Guard, presented the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal and the New Jersey Desert Strom Medal to Dr. Malik. The New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal is the state’s highest military award. Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and other officials involved in veterans’ affairs throughout the state were present at the ceremony.
Dr. Malik is a Physics teacher at Marlboro High School and a retired military veteran with over 22 years of service in the US Navy and Army. Dr. Malik’s Decorations include: two Army Achievement Medals, two Navy Achievement Medals, two Southeast Asia Service Medals, War on Terrorism Medal, National Defense Medal, four Sea Service Deployment ribbons, Meritorious Unit Commendation, three Navy Good Conduct Medals, and three Army Good Conduct Medals.
In a letter written to Dr. Malik, Gov. Chris Christie said, “On behalf of the State of New Jersey, I thank you for your service to the residents of our State and Nation. All Americans owe a tremendous debt of gratitude and appreciation to our brave veterans who risked their lives to protect our freedoms and defend our way of life.”
Dr. Malik has also been appointed as the Assistant Chair for the Middle States Association systems evaluation of all 28 high schools in Prince George's County Public School System in Upper Marlboro, Maryland next month. He will lead a team of 18 educators in the largest evaluation every conducted by the Middle States Association of Secondary Schools.
